Synopsis

Brianna Wiest's "101 Essays That Will Change the Way You Think" is a collection of insightful and thought-provoking essays that challenge conventional wisdom and offer fresh perspectives on life, love, and relationships. Wiest delves into the complexities of human psychology, exploring topics such as self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and the power of mindfulness. She encourages readers to question their beliefs, embrace their imperfections, and cultivate a more mindful and intentional approach to life.

One of the core themes of the book is the importance of self-awareness. Wiest emphasizes the need to understand our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and how they shape our experiences. She argues that by becoming more self-aware, we can identify limiting beliefs, negative thought patterns, and unhealthy habits. By challenging these patterns, we can cultivate greater self-acceptance, resilience, and fulfillment.

Another key theme is the power of mindfulness. Wiest advocates for the practice of mindfulness meditation, which involves paying attention to the present moment without judgment. By cultivating mindfulness, we can reduce stress, increase focus, and improve our overall well-being. Wiest also explores the concept of "mindful living," which involves bringing mindfulness into everyday activities, such as eating, working, and socializing.

Ultimately, "101 Essays That Will Change the Way You Think" is a powerful tool for personal growth and transformation. By challenging our assumptions, encouraging self-reflection, and promoting mindfulness, Wiest empowers readers to live more authentic, fulfilling lives.

Why I Read This Book

I decided to give this book a listen mainly to get closer to my reading goal by the end of the year. As we made our way through the second half of 2024, I came to the disappointing realization that I barely read any books to completion this year. I wanted to read at least 15 books...and I barely reached 6.

My strong sense of self-awareness helped realized that my problem lied in the way that I read. With self-help books filled with so much valuable knowledge, I built the habit of taking detailed notes while reading.

Although a great habit to have, it also caused me to read a lot less because of the added inconvenience of taking notes while doing so. If I didn't have my notebook, note-taking tools, and a proper place to set up, then I wasn't reading. This caused me to read a lot less than I had in the previous year.

To combat this, I decided to give audiobooks a try for the first time. I figured choosing a book to listen to would force me to focus on taking in the content, rather than making sure I don't miss any nugget of valuable information.

I chose to listen to this collection of essays because, in all honesty, I thought it'd be easier to avoid taking notes. They were just short pieces of inspirational and informational articles that could help me passively change my brain-wiring as I listened.

Plus, it was a lot more convenient to just have to press play on Spotify over setting up a whole note-taking shop every time I wanted to read.

Emotions Evoked from This Book

The main emotion I felt throughout reading this book was pride.

Every time I listened in the car, I was proud of myself for choosing to consume something that would enhance me as a person over deciding to listen to the same songs on repeat. It also felt amazing to know that I was using my time in commutes to get further in my reading goals.

Although listening to a woman read a bunch of articles sounds a lot more boring than bumping to your favorite songs on your drive, the opposite actually proved to be true. I found myself more excited to go on drives after I built the habit of listening to this audiobook while doing so.

With each essay I listened to, I was challenged to think differently. This made my drives a lot more engaging than singing along to songs who's lyrics I already knew every single word of. By listening to something new (and something as dense as a book), I never knew what to expect from my listen.

Would I spend the next fifteen minutes diving into the concepts of love and relationships? Or will I come out of my drive having learned new coping mechanisms for dealing with trauma? Whatever it was, I would end every drive feeling more confident in myself for having grown in that short period of time.

This was a book I never would have taken the time to read cover to cover. But, by deciding to listen to the audio version instead, I can now add 101 Essays that will Change the Way You Think to the repertoire of books that I have read.

This makes me a more interesting person, with a new way to connect to others and new thoughts that I could bring to any conversation I find myself in.

Why You Should Read It

If you're someone that doesn't consider yourself as much of a reader or at the beginning phases of your personal growth journey, this is a great book to add to your reading list.

Not only does this make for a great audio-listen for anyone looking for more ways to consume content like this passively, but it also is easy to digest and keeps you from feeling overwhelmed by an overload of information on personal development.

Whether you choose to read or listen, the best part is that this isn't a book that has to be read cover to cover. With 101 different essays written by different authors, the book is broken up into short pieces that are a couple of pages max each.

Have the book lying around and pick it up whenever you're looking for that extra boost of inspiration or advice on a particular area in life. Leave it as a part of your coffee table set up to use it as a conversation starter when hosting others.

However you decide to consume it, this collection of written works connects us in our human experiences as it reveals the schools of thought we all should be adopting. As a person on their journey of Self Discovery, this is one that could easily be checked off your reading list.
